Why Mommies Need a Primary Care Physician?

Do mommies really need a primary care physician?  Of course they do.  You may be reading this thinking, I’m perfectly healthy, I’m young and most importantly, I just don’t have the time to squeeze in one more appointment.  So if you give me a few minutes of your time, let me convince you why making this appointment to see a primary care physician could be the most important appointment of your life.

But first, who are primary care physicians?  Primary care physicians are the main health care practitioners that you will see when you have a health problem, question or concern.  They are usually the first contact for a person with an undiagnosed health problem.  The goal is to establish a long lasting relationship with your primary care physician that will enhance your health over time.

As a mother, we know and understand that you time is limited and this is why you will realize that having a primary care physician is the answer to your health care needs.  Your primary care physician will take responsibility of your health by partnering with you so you can focus on that piano recital, soccer game or that ever dreadful science project.  Your primary care physician will also get to know your family history, lifestyle and habits.  They will be able to coordinate all your health care needs and manage your chronic medical problems.   When referring you to a specialist, your primary care physician will take a comprehensive holistic approach avoiding unnecessary tests and delay in your diagnosis.  He or she will remind you of your regular checkups, immunizations and screening.   Your primary care physician can also take a proactive approach and educate you on ways to prevent conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, stress and anxiety.

Numerous studies have shown the benefits of having a primary care physician includes but is not limited to decrease health care costs, compliant patients, decrease disease burden, increase lifespan and keeping you healthier.

The key is not to wait until you are sick to find a primary care physician.  If you establish a good relationship with your primary care physician when you are healthy, then you will feel more comfortable and be seen quicker when you need to come because you are sick.  Having easy access to your primary care physician is like receiving VIP treatment.

So if your schedule is hectic, why not choose a primary care physician who will take care of you so you can take care of your family.  As the old adage states, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and one of the best ways to make sure you’re getting excellent health care is to have a primary care physician.  Remember Healthy Mommies = Healthy Kids
